Advertisements make a lot of claims and it can be hard to distinguish fact from fiction. We aim to give you straight talk about synthetic oils and oil additives so you can decide what you need for your car, boat, truck, or motorcycle. Let's start by discussing how oil works and the various additives available to help it work better.

Purposes of Motor Oil

Engine oil serves two purposes- it lubricates the moving parts of your engine to reduce friction and it protects your engine parts from rust. Viscosity is a measure of your oil's thickness. Low viscosity oil flows like water and does not stick around to lubricate and protect. High viscosity oil will move like molasses and won't get to every part of your engine efficiently. Viscosity changes with temperature, whether outside or inside your engine.

Viscosity Index Improvers

Your oil probably has two numbers- 10W-40 or 20W-50, for example. These numbers represent the oil's viscosity fluctuation, known as its index. Viscosity index improvers are oil additives that diminish the variance in viscosity so that your oil works just as well on a cold winter morning as it does on a hot summer day.

Detergents/Dispersants

Other oil additives are rust inhibitors and detergents or dispersants. These help break up sludge that accumulates over time in your engine. Zinc is also added to protect your engine surfaces.

AMSOIL Synthetic Oil

AMSOIL synthetic oil products already come with these additives in the oil.
