Riding your motorcycle during the summer can be different than riding at any other time of the year. If you want your rides to be enjoyable during these months, follow the tips in this post.

How to Ride Your Motorcycle Safely During the Summer

The summer months may seem perfect for riding your motorcycle: the sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and the air feels lighter. Still, to have enjoyable and safe rides during the summer, you will need to take certain precautions, especially since the sun and the heat can be extreme at times. To learn what these are so you can put them to good use, continue reading.

Drink Enough Water

When it's summer, it is hot; and when it is hot, you sweat. If you're a sweaty person (and even if you aren't), you should remember to drink enough water to replenish all of the lost liquid in your body. Since you'll be riding your motorcycle on sunny days, you should track how much water you're drinking, to ensure you don't fall behind on your daily intake.

Listen to Your Body

When you ride your motorcycle during summer, you expose yourself to falling victim of two ailments: dehydration and heat stroke. The former occurs when you don't drink enough water (which can be avoided by following the tip above). The latter, when you've been under the sun for too long. In any case, listen to your body and take notice if you're  dizzy, nauseous, or feverish, as these could be signs of those conditions. Avoid riding if you feel them.

Wear Appropriate Clothing

A problem arises when thinking about what clothing to don during your summer rides. On the one hand, you want light fabrics that will help you stay fresh. On the other, you need thick gear that will protect you in case of an accident. If possible, try to find the best of both worlds: impact-resistant clothing that is breathable and can keep you cool. In the end, it is more important to stay safe, so always wear your motorcycle gear. Plus, the extra layer will also defend your skin against the harsh sunlight.

Shield Your Eyes

To ride your motorcycle safely, you need to be able to see the road, people, drivers, and objects around you. However, that can become increasingly challenging when the bright sun rays of the summer months are hitting your sensitive eyes directly and are blinding you as a result. To keep your vision intact and your eyes safe, be sure to wear goggles or quality sunglasses when you ride.

Inspect Your Motorcycle

The summer time is the perfect occasion to take your motorcycle in for a professional inspection. After all, the extreme heat can do a number on a few of your motorcycle's components (like the tires, the engines, the cooling system, and more). Get your motorcycle inspected to ensure that it will be able to withstand the difficult conditions without much problem.

Practice on Your Motorcycle

If you haven't driven your motorcycle in a while (for instance, if you had it in storage during the colder months), it could be a good idea to practice on it before you take it on the road again. Your motorcycle riding skills could be a little rusty, so go for a few laps in a safe space to get the hang of everything once more. If needed, you could even enroll in motorcycle lessons.

Avoid Road Rage

Hot temperatures make people crazy, which is why it's more probable that you'll give in to road rage during this time of year. Still, remember that road rage could increase the number of mistakes you make on the road, so take deep breaths and try to avoid it as much as possible. It's also important that you notice if other drivers are raging, so you can be extra careful when riding near them.

Check the Weather

Finally, you should make it a point to check the weather before you ride. Summer is also the wet season in some places, which could make your riding experience much more complicated. Likewise, if you notice that the temperatures on any given day will be particularly high, you may want to sit this one out or ride until the sun has lowered.
