Wax on, wax off

Diesel fuel naturally contains a beneficial waxy material, provided it remains liquid. As the temperature drops, however, the wax solidifies into a snow-cone-like material, like what your kids eat at the state fair. Your fuel system will struggle to pump this material, eventually starving the engine of fuel and leaving you stranded.

The fuel refineries do a pretty good job of blending winter-rated diesel fuel that avoids gelling. But they typically base the rating of the fuel on temperature projections that don’t leave room for sudden and violent temperature swings. If you find yourself checking the weather on your phone and the outlook calls for blustery, cold temps, it’s possible the fuel at the station where you plan to fill up the next morning doesn’t yet have fuel blended for the temperatures in the forecast.
